While LASIK is a popular option for vision correction surgery, not everyone is an ideal candidate for the procedure. As I detailed in my previous blog post, implantable contact lenses (ICLs) can often be a great alternative for patients who are tired of dealing with glasses and standard contact lenses but are not candidates to receive LASIK.
ICL surgery is typically performed for individuals who require more vision correction than could be safely performed with a laser. For example, if a patient has an abnormal cornea, it may be unsafe to perform any kind of surgery on the cornea itself – as is required by LASIK. Similarly, if a patient is very near sighted but has extremely thin corneas, the risks of LASIK also increase. In cases such as these, ICLs may be a safer alternative method vision correction.
When our vision correction patients visit Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute Institute for their initial consultation, many are expecting to have LASIK surgery. When a patient learns he or she is not an ideal candidate for LASIK, they are often surprised to find out there is another option available that can offer excellent results. After conducting some of their own research and talking more about the procedure during the consultation process, they are thrilled to discover they still have the opportunity to dramatically improve their vision without the need for glasses or contacts.
