Dr. Rakhi Melvani brings expertise in Cornea, Cataract, and Refractive Surgery to the team at Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute. She specializes in corneal transplant techniques (PKP, DSAEK, DMEK), advanced cataract procedures, refractive surgery, and complex anterior segment surgeries, including intraocular lens exchanges.
Originally from Apple Valley, California, Dr. Melvani excelled academically as valedictorian of Granite Hills High School. She earned a double major in biology and psychology from the Honors College at Virginia Commonwealth University on a full academic scholarship, graduating Summa Cum Laude and receiving honors as the top student in cellular/molecular biology. Continuing her medical education at Virginia Commonwealth University, she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, a prestigious medical honor society, and graduated Summa Cum Laude with the highest GPA in her class, receiving the distinguished A.D. Williams Award. Her medical journey continued with an internship at Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she quickly grew to love San Diego.
Dr. Melvani completed her ophthalmology residency at the renowned Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she contributed as Resident Editor for the Review of Ophthalmology journal and mentored junior residents. Her final year of surgical training included an international stint in Bomet, Kenya, through the Wills Eye Center for Academic Global Ophthalmology, which further enriched her experience.
Dr. Melvani’s dedication to anterior segment surgery led her to a specialized Cornea Fellowship at UC Irvine. She is enthusiastic about building lasting relationships with her patients and the San Diego community and is currently accepting new patients.
