At Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute, we are committed to bringing the latest vision care innovations and most advanced treatment options to our patients. We are excited to announce that we are the first practice in San Diego to offer the RxSight® Light Adjustable Lens™. This revolutionary intraocular lens (IOL) is the first of its kind and it gives cataract surgery patients the opportunity to achieve more precise vision correction while reducing or eliminating their dependence on glasses or contacts.
How Does the Light Adjustable Lens Work?
A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, and once cataracts interfere with vision, surgery is the only effective treatment. Cataract surgery involves replacing the clouded lens with an artificial lens called an IOL. At Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute, we offer a full range of artificial lenses, from standard IOLs that correct vision at a single distance to a variety of premium IOLs that offer multifocal correction. The light adjustable lens (LAL) is an advanced IOL option that is placed during cataract surgery.
What makes this lens so exciting is that it is the first and only IOL in which the prescription can be adjusted after surgery. Patients who receive the LAL return to our office several weeks after cataract surgery, once the eye has healed, to have their prescription fine-tuned by their eye doctor. The LAL is made of a special photoreactive material and adjustments are made with a quick, non-invasive, painless UV light treatment. Patients typically require between 2 and 4 adjustment appointments before their prescription is finalized.
Benefits of the Light Adjustable Lens
- First and only lens that allows for adjustments to IOL prescription after surgery
- Offers a superior accuracy with customized vision correction
- LAL patients twice as likely to achieve 20/20 distance vision vs. standard IOLs
- Postoperative adjustment appointments are quick and painless
